Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - Before a standing-room-only crowd of 5,468 fans, the largest crowd in the last five years at L.P. Frans Stadium, the Hickory Crawdads one-hit the Delmarva Shorebirds, 3-1, on Wednesday night. Hickory LHP Will Lamb and RHP Nick McBride combined for the one-hit performance, keeping the Crawdads in sole possession of 1st place in the Northern Division Second Half Standings.
Delmarva (3-10, 31-51) struck with it's only hit and only run in the top of the third inning. C Wynston Sawyer led off the inning with a single, before moving around to third on an error followed by a sacrifice bunt. In the process of striking out the subsequent two batters, Lamb (W, 2-6) did unleash a wild pitch, allowing Sawyer to score for the 1-0 lead for Delmarva. However, Lamb retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced to keep the Shorebirds offense at bay throughout his seven innings on the mound, striking out seven along the way.
The Crawdads (11-3, 47-36) responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game against LHP Eduardo Rodriguez. DH Rougned Odor started the charge with a base hit to left field and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by RF Trever Adams. 1B Jorge Alfaro drove in Odor on an RBI sacrifice fly to deep center field, tying the game, 1-1.
The 'Dads then jumped in front with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against RHP Jesse Beal (L, 1-3). 3B Drew Robinson led off the inning with a single driven the opposite way to shallow left-center field. Robinson then reached third base on a single pulled to right field by Odor. After Odor stole second base, Alfaro shot a base hit to left field, plating Robinson and putting the Crawdads ahead, 2-1. LF Jhonny Gomez followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center, scoring Odor from third to lift the Crawdads to the 3-1 lead.
Lamb retired the side in order in the seventh inning, before RHP Nick McBride (S, 2) took over on the mound. McBride picked up right where Lamb left off, tossing two scoreless and hitless innings to close the 3-1 win for the Crawdads.
