Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Missed opportunities did the Penguins in Friday night, as the Binghamton Senators posted a 3-1 victory against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The loss dropped the Penguins' record to 8-9-0-0 on the season, while the Senators upped their mark to 9-8-1-0.

The Pens had plenty of chances to score against Jeff Glass and his Binghamton brethren, as referee Chris Brown awarded Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 12 power plays on the evening, including a pair of five-on-threes during the first and second periods.

The ineffectiveness with the extra man cost the home club, as the Senators used goals from Geoff Waugh, Tyler Donati and Niko Dimitriakos to record their third win of the season against the Penguins, and second in as many tries. The Sens blanked the Pens, 3-0 in last Sunday's meeting in Wilkes-Barre.

Neither team could find the net in the first period, and the Penguins saw their opponents take a pair of penalties to start the second frame, giving them a two-man advantage early on.

Tim Brent wound up a slap shot from the point that was blocked, and bounced out to the neutral zone just as Waugh was leaving the box. His breakaway attempt was initially stopped by goalie Ty Conklin, but the puck fluttered up and over Conklin as he fell to the ice, finally ending up inside the cage.

Donati tipped home a Nycholat shot from long range four minutes later to give the Senators a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Chris Minard got the Penguins back in the game, swatting a shot out of midair 1:37 into the third period. The tally was his fourth of the season, but only his first since recording a hat trick on opening night against the Hershey Bears.

Dimtriakos put the game away with his seventh goal of the season at 13:12 of the third period.

Glass made 36 saves to record the win, while Conklin turned aside 17 of 20 shots.

The two teams will complete their home-and-home series on Saturday night in Broome County, where the Penguins posted a 3-0 win in their last visit on November 9.
