Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The Power lost the series finale at Asheville on Tuesday by an 11-5 final. Nathan Baker allowed five runs on six hits over five innings in the loss. Aaron Baker, Jarek Cunningham, and Rogelio Noris all hit late home runs, but West Virginia's rally was too little too late. The Power lead the season series against Asheville 5-3 with four games left to be played. The Tourists return to Charleston on August 17.
OFFENSIVE OFFENSE: The Power allowed season highs in runs and hits during Tuesday's loss. The game marked the first time that West Virginia surrendered doubled digits in runs, 11, this year, while the hit tally, 14, surpassed the previous high of 11, achieved three times against the Power pitching staff.
POWER ALL-STARS: West Virginia placed four players on the 2010 South Atlantic League's Northern Division All-Star team. Ramon Cabrera, Aaron Baker, David Rubinstein, and Nathan Baker were selected by the managers, staff, fans, and media to compete in the mid-season classic, to be played at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina on June 22. Aaron Baker will start at designated hitter for the North, which will be managed by Hickory's Bill Richardson. Hagerstown, Hickory, and Kannapolis each placed five representatives on the squad.
RUBINSTEIN ROLLS ON: Power outfielder David Rubinstein extended his current hitting streak to 11 straight dating back to May 27 in Sunday's doubleheader. The right fielder is batting .381 during this 11-game stretch, and has surpassed the previous season-best eight game runs by several West Virginia players this season. Rubinstein's current streak is the longest active such streak in the league, and is tied for the fifth longest game-wise run this season.
NOT FAR BEHIND: Jarek Cunningham is on a ten game hitting streak entering play today. The second baseman is batting .375 during that stretch, which dates back to May 31, and has seen his average climb from .243 to .268 with 15 hits in 40 at bats. He has also hit three home runs and driven in ten runs over his last ten games.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is 22-2 when scoring five runs or more this season... Mike Williams save on Monday was the first of his professional career... The Power are 22-21 since Gary Green moved Evan Chambers to the top of the order. The outfielder has a .427 on-base percentage since moving to the top of the lineup... Jarek Cunningham's grand slam Saturday marked the first time this season that a Power player drove in more than three runs in a game, which had happened nine different times... Aaron Baker has homered in two straight, becoming the third Power player to accomplish the feat this season. Only Rogelio Noris has hit home runs in three straight games this year... West Virginia is 1-7 on Thursdays this season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 7-5 at Washington. Brad Lincoln and Jose Tabata made their Major League debuts in the loss... Indianapolis edged Pawtucket 5-3... Altoona had the day off... Bradenton lost 3-2 at Fort Myers.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com.
