CHARLESTON, WV - The Lakewood BlueClaws scored four runs in the first inning on the strength of two home runs, rolling to an 8-2 win Thursday night over the West Virginia Power (Pirates).

Jiwan James doubled on the first pitch of the game, and Jonathan Villar hit his first home run of the season three pitches later to make it 2-0.

After an 11-pitch walk to Stephen Batts, Sebastian Valle then hit his team-leading seventh homer to extend the lead to four.

Valle hit one blast in the first 40 games of the 2010 season. Since then he has six in his last 12 games.

The BlueClaws (35-26) success against Power (29-32) starter Kyle McPherson (4-6) continued in the second. James drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 Lakewood lead. McPherson wouldn't make it through the inning, giving up five runs (four earned) in just 1 2/3 innings.

In the third, an RBI double by Keoni De Renne made it 6-0 Lakewood.

BlueClaws starter Colby Shreve (4-3) recovered from three losses in a row to post a solid outing, allowing two runs on five hits through 6 innings. Both of the runs came on an Evan Chambers two-run shot in the bottom half of the third to cut the Claws lead to 6-2.

That was as close as West Virginia would get. A Batts sac-fly RBI put the lead at 7-2, and an Anthony Hewitt solo shot in the seventh concluded the scoring at 8-2.

With the win the BlueClaws move a 1/2 game out of first in the South Atlantic League North, and the Claws could move into a tie for first if the Hickory Crawdads lose to the Augusta GreenJackets.

Friday night at 7:05 pm LHP Matt Way (4-4, 4.12) takes the hill for the Claws against RHP Jason Erickson (4-3, 3.35).
