Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets used a six-run fifth inning to propel their way to a 9-3 win in a series opener with the Hickory Crawdads in front of 3,663 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Thursday night.
The battle between both division leaders turned on a dime in the fourth when Hickory starter Neil Ramirez hit two batters and walked another to load the bases with two outs in the inning. Daniel Cook drilled a bases-clearing double into the left field corner to give Augusta a three-run lead and shift the balance toward the GreenJackets for good.
Cook scored on a Nick Liles single to make it 5-1 and after a Ryan Lollis hit, Ryan Cavan reached on a dropped third strike as the wild pitch scored another Augusta run. Chris Dominguez singled home a run to round out the inning.
Augusta struck first in the third inning on a Lollis run-scoring double but Hickory tied things on Matt West's RBI single in the fourth inning before the GreenJackets broke open the floodgates. Hickory scored again in the fifth but a Cavan sixth-inning groundout got the run back for Augusta. Cook would single home a run in the seventh as part of his three-hit, four-RBI night while the âDads scored again in the eighth inning.
Kyle Vazquez threw 4.2 for the GreenJackets, but couldn't get out of the fifth inning - walking a batter and hitting two - on a night where he allowed two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Chris Gloor (3-1) came on to get the last out of the fifth and get the win for Augusta. Gloor fired 2.1 scoreless, one-hit innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Ramirez (6-4) took the loss by allowing six runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The game was halted by rain for 37 minutes in the bottom of the first inning.
With the win, the GreenJackets remain one game ahead of the Savannah Sand Gnats in the Southern Division while Hickory drops into a first-place tie with Lakewood after the loss.
Chris Heston (2-5, 6.28) gets the ball for the GreenJackets and will face Joe Wieland (4-4, 4.43) in game two of the series on Friday night. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
