Tonight: The Gnats begin a three-game series in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Gnats, who have won three games in a row, are one game out of first place with ten games to play in the season's first half.
Last Game: Tuesday, the Gnats came from behind to beat Kannapolis 8-7 in 10 innings. The Gnats tied the game on a Luis Rivera single which drove home Cesar Puello in the ninth, and won it on Puello's RBI single in the 10th. The Gnats had a 5-1 lead, but the Intimidators scored six unanswered runs from the fourth to sixth innings for a 7-5 lead.
Now Pitching: Reigning SAL Pitcher of the week, Mark Cohoon will make his 12th Sand Gnats start of the year. In his last start, Cohoon threw the first nine-inning complete game shutout in the South Atlantic League this year, in a 6-0 Savannah win over Asheville. Cohoon struck out ten and walked one. It was the second time this year that Cohoon had thrown nine shutout innings, but the previous time, on May 5th, the Gnats did not score until the 12th inning in a 1-0 win in Delmarva. The Gnats are 8-3 in Cohoon's starts and have supported him with 4.5 runs per game, the fourth-best mark among the seven pitchers who have started games for Savannah this year. His 1.62 ERA is 2nd-best in the SAL trailing only Nicholas Hernandez (1.61) of Lakewood by one hundredth of a percentage point. He is 13th overall in Minor League Baseball. Cohoon leads the SAL in innings pitched (72.1). He spent all of 2009 with Brooklyn in the New York-Penn League where he was 9-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 14 starts. He fanned 70 and walked 20 in 92 innings. His 2.15 ERA was 6th in the League and the Mets recognized him with the team's Sterling Award as the Cyclones' MVP. In 2008 with Savannah, Cohoon was 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA in seven starts after moving directly from the Kingsport Mets, skipping over Brooklyn. The Mets drafted Cohoon in the 12th round of the 2008 draft out of North Central Texas College.
Vs. Greensboro: This is the first of seven scheduled meetings between the Gnats and the Grasshoppers this year, all of which will take place in Greensboro. The Gnats are 5-7 against Greensboro as a Mets affiliate. The last time Savannah played more than four games against Greensboro was 2005, when they were 6-2 against the Grasshoppers.
Simply the Best: The Gnats' pitching staff not only leads the SAL in ERA but Savannah's 2.45 ERA is the best in all of Minor League Baseball. The Gnats are one of six teams in the country with an ERA under 3.00 joined by the AA San Antonio Missions (2.91), the Advanced-A Kinston Indians (2.87), the Advanced-A Lakeland Flying Tigers (2.84), the A Clinton Lumberkings (2.88) and the A Great Lakes Loons (2.95).
All-Stars: SS Wilmer Flores, Juan Lagares, Kai Gronauer, Jimmy Fuller, Mark Cohoon and Brandon Moore were named to the SAL Southern Division All-Star team on Monday. The Gnats' six All-Stars is the most of any SAL team.
Hot: Juan Lagares rides a ten game hitting streak over which time he is 17-for-40 (.425) with two doubles, a triple and five RBI...Pedro Zapata has a nine game hitting streak going over which time he is hitting .355 (13 H/35 AB) with three doubles and 7 RBI...Michael Fisher has hit safely in six of seven games since joining Savannah and all six games he's started, going 9-for-24 (.375).... Cesar Puello is hitting .375 (6 H/16 AB) in his last five games.
Not: Wilmer Flores is hitting .134 (11-for-82) since May 16th when his average peaked at .364/.418/.589 (AVG/OBP/SLG). Flores is just 1-17 (.059) in his last four games.
