Suns Drop Series Opener to RiverDogs

The Hagerstown Suns (30-31) lost a tough one to the Charleston RiverDogs (28-32) 9-5 Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium.

Charleston started swinging the bats in the top of the second after Kyle Higashioka singled to right. Robert Lyerly hit a double to left putting Higashioka on third. After Deangelo Mack singled to third and a throwing error by the Suns, Higashioka and Lyerly scored giving Charleston a 2-0 lead.

Hagerstown answered back with J.R Higley walking but advanced to third after stealing second and a throwing error by the RiverDogs. Scoring Higley was Francisco Soriano by hitting a double to right. Hagerstown tied the game 2-2 after Soriano scored after Jeff Kobernus hit a single to center.

The RiverDogs kept going by scoring a run in the third by Slade Heathcott and another one in the fourth with Deangelo Mack hitting a double scoring Robert Lyerly. Charleston took the lead 4-2.

In the bottom of the fourth with J.R Higley on first after a line drive to left, Franciso Soriano doubled to right scoring Higley bringing the game within one. Right fielder Justin Bloxom scored in Soriano after a double to right. Hagerstown tied the game 4-4.

The Suns took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Destin Hood reaching on a ground ball to right putting him in great scoring position. JR Higley had an RBI to center bringing in Hood; Suns take the lead 5-4.

Charleston kept swinging in the top of the sixth with Deangelo Mark hitting a double scoring Rober Lyerly after a double from him as well. Mack scored next with Slade Heathcott out on a sacrifice giving the RiverDogs a 6-5 lead.

The momentum stayed with the RiverDogs in the top of the ninth after a Suns pitcher Rob Wort replaced Kyle Morrison. With the JR Murphy on second and Jimmy Peredes on first, Luke Murton hit a home run to left field making the score 9-5.

Hagerstown starting pitcher Trevor Holder pitched five innings giving up five runs just three earned. Kyle Morrison (1-3) got the loss of the evening with three innings pitched giving up two hits with one run.

The starting pitcher for the RiverDogs Jose Ramirez pitched four innings giving up seven hits and four runs. Ryan Acosta (4-1) got the win pitching two with three hits and one run. Franciso Gil had the hold of the evening coming in the bottom of the seventh with two stikeouts. Ryan Flannery got the save giving up a hit and one strikeout.

The Hagerstown Suns return to action Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the RiverDogs for the second game of the three-game series.
