Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (August 7, 2009) - The Kannapolis Intimidators used a four run ninth inning on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park to complete a four game sweep of the West Virginia Power with an 8-3 victory.
The Power took their only lead of the night in the bottom of the second inning when Kyle Morgan belted a solo homer, his fourth of the season. The Intimidators answered quickly when Josh Phegley smashed a solo bomb in the top of the third. The game remained tied at 1-1 until Drew Garcia's single to left field in the seventh inning scored Eduardo Escobar, giving the Intimidators the lead. Kannapolis added two more in the eighth on Phegley's single, his third hit of the night which scored Jon Gilmore and Jared Mitchell.
West Virginia made it interesting in the eighth inning. Adenson Chourio scored on Phegley's errant throw, and they had the bases loaded with one down when Calvin Anderson reached on a fielder's choice to score Austin McClune. After West Virginia stole a little momentum with the two-run eighth, the Intimidators pulled away with a four run ninth inning. Mitchell doubled in the first run and Kyle Shelton knocked in the next three with his fourth homer of the season.
Joe Serafin (1-0) allowed just a run on six hits over six and a third while striking out six to get the victory. Duke Welker (0-10) was tagged for three runs on four hits over a pair of innings in relief and was tagged with the loss. Brett Lorin started the game for West Virginia and delivered six strong innings, allowing just a run on eight hits with four strikeouts.
West Virginia fell to 46-61 overall, and 19-18 in the second half after the loss, while the Intimidators improved to 62-48 overall and 25-15 in the second half after the win. Robbie Grossman, and Josue Peley were the only two to turn in multi-hit games for West Virginia. Austin McClune doubled in his final at bat to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Grossman's two-hit performance extended his on base streak to six games, and Peley's two-hit game put his hitting streak at four games. The loss puts West Virginia 4.5 games behind the Intimidators in the Northern Division with a month to go.
West Virginia will begin a four game series with the Hickory Crawdads at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday night. The Power will start right hander Casey Erickson (3-1, 0.87). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:00 PM.
