Asheville Tourists News Release
(Asheville, NC) - The Hot Rods jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Asheville came storming back with seven runs in the sixth and seventh to take the game and the series, 9-7. Juan Nicasio pitched alright, but had a hiccup with two outs in the third inning, coming away with a no-decision in 5.0 innings of work.
Bowling Green jumped out in front with five runs over their first three innings, with the first coming on a solo homerun by Jake Jefferies, and the remaining four on two-out rally in the third. Tim Beckham picked up an infield single and the Hot Rods pieced together five straight hits against Nicasio, plating four runs to take a 5-0 lead.
The Tourists couldn't solve Bowling Green starter Chris Andujar, with the exception of a Kiel Roling solo homer in the bottom of the third to cut the Hot Rods lead to 5-1.
Asheville got going against the Bowling Green bullpen in the bottom of the fifth, as Tyree Hayes came on for Andujar. Delta Cleary greeted him with a base hit up the middle and Jordan Pacheco mashed one off the right-field wall for a double, plating Cleary all the way from first to make it 5-2. Kiel Roling drew his second walk of the game, and a Jimmy Cesario bloop single loaded the bases with no outs. As Hayes prepared to throw his first pitch to Ryan Peisel, he committed a balk, plating Pacheco to make it 5-3 and moving the runners to second and third. Peisel took advantage, slapping a line drive base hit to the gap in right-center, scoring both runners to tie the game at 5-5. Hayes would get a double play to help retire the side without further incident.
The Tourists did not relent, plating three more in the bottom of the sixth against another reliever, Jamie Bagley. Carlos Martinez led off with an infield single and Scott Robinson picked up a base hit to put runners on first and second. Delta Cleary dropped a bunt down the first base line and Mike Sheridan fielded it for Bowling Green, throwing wildly in an attempt to get Martinez at third base. The ball went into left field, allowing Martinez to score and advancing the runners to second and third. Robinson came in on a wild pitch, making it 7-5, and Jordan Pacheco picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5.
Pacheco struck again in the eighth with another RBI double off the wall in right field, giving the Tourists a 9-5 lead.
Bowling Green scratched out a couple of runs against Tyler Trice in the ninth before the Tourists called on Adam Jorgenson, who picked up his South Atlantic League-leading 21st save of the season.
The Tourists (25-14) will head to Lexington to face the Legends (18-21) for a four-game series before returning home to McCormick Field Thursday, August 13th. Asheville will send RHP Dan Houston (5-8, 3.95) to the mound in game one to take on Lexington RHP Ross Seaton (8-8, 2.67).
