Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Joe Serafin helped Kannapolis continue their domination of the West Virginia Power on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park, as the Intimidators southpaw pitched his club to a 8-3 win and a series sweep.
Serafin, making just his second start in a Kannapolis uniform since being drafted in the 37th round earlier this year, worked 6 1/3 one-run innings. The 23-year-old struck out six without walking a batter.
Kannapolis is now 10-2 against the Pirates affiliate this season, with three games remaining between the two in the 2009 campaign.
Kyle Morgan put Kannapolis in an early hole, taking Serafin (1-0) deep to lead off the second, but the one-run lead was short lived. Josh Phegley hit his sixth home run of the season to lead off the third and the Intimidators never trailed the rest of the way.
Kannapolis took the lead for good with a single run in the seventh off of Duke Welker (0-10). Drew Garcia's RBI single scored Eduardo Escobar to make it 2-1. The Intimidators plated seven runs over the last three innings.
West Virginia made it a ballgame in the eighth, scoring twice off of reliever Kyle Bellamy, but Kannapolis scored four in the ninth to put the Power away. Kyle Shelton's two-out, three-run home run off of Wilson Ortiz ended the West Virginia hopes of a comeback. It was the fourth long ball this season for Shelton.
The victory finished off a critical 6-2 road trip and moved the Intimidators 3 ½ games clear of their nearest opposition in the Northern Division standings. Lake County currently holds second position, while Delmarva and Hickory are four games behind.
