Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 4-3 on Thursday to the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park. The Crawdads built a 4-0 lead and staved off a Power comeback to win the series opener.
In the second inning, Hickory struck for a run on three hits off West Virginia starter Zack Von Rosenberg. The Crawdads added three runs in the top of the fourth. The first three batters of the inning reached to load the bases. Hirotoshi Onaka walked to bring home Kellin Deglan, Jorge Alfaro scored on a groundout, and Nick Urbanus crossed on a single by Rougned Odor for a 4-0 advantage.
Crawdads starter Jared Eickhoff limited the Power to two hits over the game's first five innings. In the sixth, Jose Monegro relieved Eickhoff and allowed a leadoff by Elias Diaz. Alen Hanson singled and Diaz advanced to third. Taylor Lewis hit a ground ball back to Monegro, who threw to second to start a double play. Hanson was retired at second, but Lewis was safe at first and Diaz scored to break up the shutout. Eric Avila followed with a two-run home run that put West Virginia down 4-3.
The bullpens settled in over the final three innings. The Crawdads managed two hits over the final three innings against Joan Montero and Pat Ludwig. The Power reached on a single against Arlett Mavare in the eighth, but the Hickory right-hander recorded seven of the final nine outs on strikeouts.
Von Rosenberg (4-6) took the loss after allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits over five innings. Eickhoff (12-7) earned the win with five scoreless innings and Mavare notched his sixth save.
