LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Aug. 23, 2012) -- The Lakewood BlueClaws blitzed the Intimidators with five consecutive doubles to open the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 5-run frame and an 8-7 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.
The BlueClaws overcame a 7-3 deficit entering the bottom of the sixth and held the Intimidators off the scoreboard the rest of the way with three scoreless frames from Felix Santos, who earned the save (2). The Intimidators put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth with one out.
Lakewood's Blake Marcarello (4-1) earned the win, working 3.0 innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. Jeff Soptic entered the game in relief of Chris Hanna -- who faced the first four batters of the sixth inning. Soptic (3-2) gave up a run on two hits over 2.0 innings to take the loss.
Courtney Hawkins, the White Sox top pick, followed a Bill Rice single by launching a two-run home run (2) in the top of the first. Michael Marjama added a two-run double for an early 4-0 lead. Marjama finished the game, 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Intimidators at the plate.
Lakewood returned fire with three straight hits to open the home half of the second, including a three-run home run from Willie Carmoma (1) to pull the BlueClaws within a run, 4-3. Carmona finished the night 2- for-3 with four RBI to lead the BlueClaws.
Andrew Douglas extended the Intimidators lead with an RBI-single in the third inning. Grant Buckner connected on his third hit of the night, a run-scoring double in the sixth inning, and scored on an error for a 7-3 Kannapolis lead. Buckner went 3-for-5 at the plate.
The Intimidators play game two of a 4-game series against the BlueClaws on Friday at FirstEnergy Park as RHP Bryan Blough (2-6, 4.50) faces Lakewood's LHP Lino Martinez (6-5, 5.83). The Intimidators return to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Tuesday, Aug. 28, to face the Greenville Drive to open the final home stand of the season.
