POWER REPLAY: West Virginia beat Lakewood 4-3 on Memorial Day. The BlueClaws took a 2-0 lead after three innings, but the Power scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead on four straight singles against reliever Gabriel Arias. West Virginia used three straight hits in the fifth to add an insurance run. Vince Payne picked up the win in relief of Zack Dodson and Robbie Kilcrease pitched the final two innings for his third save. Kirk Singer collected three of the nine Power hits and drove in a pair of runs.
1.5 MILLION AND COUNTING:During the course of the weekend series with Kannapolis, West Virginia drew a combined 12,837 fans to Appalachian Power Park. With an attendance of 3,641 during Friday night's game, the Power surpassed the 1.5 million fan mark dating back to 2005 when the stadium opened. In seven seasons plus 25 home dates this year, spanning 481 total home games, an average of 3,132 fans have walked through the gates per night.
LOPEZ TO BRADENTON: Pittsburgh promoted Porfirio Lopez to the Bradenton Marauders this morning. The southpaw was 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA over two stints with the Power this season.
SAME NAME, NEW ARM: The Pirates added Nathan Kilcrease to the West Virginia roster earlier today. Pittsburgh signed the right-hander as a Minor League free agent on May 25. Kilcrease was drafted in the 30th round of the 2011 draft by the Oakland A's from the University of Alabama. Kilcrease was 3-4 with Vermont in the NYPL last season and had a 2.67 ERA over 20 appearances. He was 1-1 with the Burlington Bees in the Midwest League this season and had a 1.46 ERA over seven games before being released by Oakland on May 23. Nathan Kilcrease is not related to Power southpaw Robbie Kilcrease.
TIME TO GET CRACKING: West Virginia and Lakewood continue their only series between the clubs during the first half of the season. The Power trail 52-42 in the all-time series, including 24 wins in 55 games at Appalachian Power Park (a .436 winning percentage. West Virginia and Lakewood will face off 16 times during 70 second half games this year (23% of the second half schedule).
FOUR SPOT: On Saturday night, Alen Hanson became the second Power player to have a four hit game this season. Gregory Polanco had four hits in West Virginia's 9-6 win on April 30 against Greensboro. Hanson leads the league with 66 hits and the four-hit game helped raise his average to .338, the third highest mark in the SAL.
DAY OFF... NOW GO: West Virginia will play 19 games over the next 20 days. After this series against Lakewood, the Power travel to Hickoryfor four games, play Delmarva at home in a three game set, and have a day off on June 8. The club concludes the first half of the season with a six-game road trip to Asheville and Lexington before playing Hagerstown from June 14 through 17 prior to the All-Star break.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 15: West Virginia will hold Pink Power Night on June 15 against the Hagerstown Suns. The team will don pink jerseys that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Komen for the Cure Foundation.
POWER POINTS: Monday's victory was the first after an off day this season. The Power are now 1-4 after a day off... West Virginia is now 4-3 on Mondays this season, the only day of the week when the team had a winning record... Yesterday's win was the fourth in 15 series opening games this year.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati 4-1 to move back to .500 for the season. The Buccos are now three games back of the reds in the NL Central... Indianapolis knocked of Durham 7-4... Altoona was blanked 4-0 by Bowie... Bradenton had Memorial Day off and opens a series at home against Fort Myers tonight.
