Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC- With the Charleston RiverDogs leading the Asheville Tourists 7-3 in the bottom of the third and a man on second base with two outs, the rains came and forced a suspension of the South Atlantic League game on Tuesday Night at McCormick Field.
The game will be resumed tomorrow as part of a doubleheader and will be finished as a normal nine inning game. The game originally scheduled for 11:05 am will be started 30 minutes after the end of the first game and will be a 7-inning affair. RHP Joel De La Cruz (2-2, 3.46) will take over on the mound for the RiverDogs when the game resumes and RHP Geoff Parker (1-2, 4.50 ERA) will relieve for Asheville in the top of the fourth. Will Oliver was on the mound for the RiverDogs, while Chris Jensen had thrown the first three innings for Asheville.
Charleston grabbed the lead with six runs in the first inning. Two singles with one out brought up Tyler Austin who singled to knock in the first run. A Gary Sanchez double and a Ben Gamel single each knocked in one run and a fourth run scored on a throwing error. Kelvin De Leon capped things off with a two-run double. Asheville cut into the lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Samuel Mende, who later scored on wild pitch to make the score 6-2.
The teams traded runs in the third, the RiverDogs scoring when Casey Stevenson doubled and touched home on a sacrifice fly by De Leon. The Tourists matched it on a solo homer by Trevor Story.
Game two of the doubleheader will have the same starters as originally scheduled, with Charelston's RHP Evan Rutckyj (1-1, 7.11 ERA) facing Asheville RHP Daniel Winkler (6-2, 4.81 ERA).
