Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power knocked off the Lakewood BlueClaws 7-3 on Tuesday at Appalachian Power Park. The BlueClaws blew a 2-0 lead for the second straight day as the Power plated seven runs between the fifth and seventh innings to take the second game of this series.
Lakewood held a 1-0 lead after two innings thanks to a run-scoring single by John Hill that brought home Brian Pointer. Kyrell Hudson was sent home on the play as well, but was thrown out at the plate by West Virginia right fielder Carlos Mesa. The BlueClaws added a run in the fourth when Chris Duffy doubled, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch by Power starter Robby Rowland.
In the fifth, West Virginia halved the deficit on a back-to-back singled by Kirk Singer and Francisco Diaz.
The Power took the lead in the sixth inning by sending six batters to the plate. With two outs and runners on at second and third, Junior Sosa hit a ground ball to BlueClaws third baseman Harold Martinez. Martinez's throw bounced past the first baseman Kelly Dugan and into the stands, allowing the tying and go-ahead runs to score for a 3-2 West Virginia lead.
West Virginia added a four-run cushion to the lead in the seventh on two triples, three walks, and two Lakewood errors for a 7-2 advantage. The BlueClaws tallied the game's final run in the eighth to cap the scoring a 7-3.
Rowland (1-1) pitched six innings for his first quality start of the season and earned the victory, while Lakewood's first reliever into the game, Colton Murray (1-3), was charged with the loss after surrendering both sixth inning runs. Orlando Castro notched a hold for the Power with one shutout inning of relief before Clario Perez worked the final two frames.
Gregory Polanco keyed the West Virginia offense with a three-hit night. The Power also benefited from the three Lakewood errors that created four runs.
This series concludes Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park with a 7:05 first pitch. Matt Benedict and Ethan Stewart are expected to pitch for the Power and BlueClaws, respectively.
