Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, W.V. - For the second straight night the BlueClaws jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but West Virginia came back for a 7-3 victory at Appalachian Power Park Tuesday night.
The BlueClaws held a 2-1 lead in the 6th inning when West Virginia had runners on second and third base with two outs. Carlos Mesa hit a grounder to Harold Martinez at third base who fielded it cleanly, but then yanked the throw across the diamond which skipped up into the stands. The error allowed two runs to score and give the Power a 3-2 instead of allowing the 'Claws to escape the inning with a one-run lead still intact.
Colton Murray was in the ballgame for the BlueClaws in 6th inning and he was charged with the loss despite not giving up an earned run in his inning of work. Murray's record on the season is now 1-3. Starting pitcher Ervis Manzanillo had his best start of the season for the BlueClaws. Manzanillo, who had not pitched in a game since May 11th because of being placed on the disabled list with an illness, struck out a season-high five batters in five innings. He went five innings and allowed one, unearned run in the outing, but could not earn his first win. With the no-decision, his record sits at 0-3 on the season.
Of the seven runs the BlueClaws allowed, just two were earned in part to three errors in the ballgame that led to five unearned runs.
John Hill and Christopher Duffy both saw their first action for the BlueClaws since being recalled from Clearwater (A). Duffy, who was playing in just his 8th game of the season for Lakewood went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Hill, a catcher who last appeared in a game for Lakewood on May 12th was 1-for-3 and drove home the first run of the game in the 2nd inning.
The BlueClaws and Power finish their three-game series Wednesday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The BlueClaws will send Ethan Stewart (0-5, 3.28) to the mound against West Virginia's Matt Benedict (2-3, 2.89). Following Wednesday's game the BlueClaws will travel four hours to Kannapolis, N.C. to begin a four-game series with the Intimidators.
First pitch for Wednesday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Listen to all the action on WOBM 1160-AM and WOBM 1310-AM beginning at 6:50 p.m.
