POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost 6-5 to Lakewood in 10 innings on Monday afternoon. The game was tied at three after six innings before Eric Avila's first home run of the season in the seventh put the Power up by one. The BlueClaws hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth to take the lead, but Rogelio Noris hit a solo home run to even the score at five and send the game to extras. Lakewood plated a run in the top of the tenth to capture the win. Tyler Waldron took the loss in relief of Jameson Taillon.
EXTRA EXTRA: Monday's game was the first time this season that the Power were forced to play extra innings. West Virginia was the only team going in to play that morning across the entire South Atlantic League that had not played extra innings in any game this year.
BACK FOR MORE: Rogelio Noris hit 15 home runs for West Virginia during the 2010 season and has added two to that total so far this season. Stephen Chapman holds the single-season record with 24, which is also the most by any player during his respective stint with West Virginia. Noris is now tied with Andrew LaFave for seventh all-time, one behind Mat Gamel and Aaron Baker for sixth, and two home runs away from moving into the top five.
FOR THE BIRDS: The Power start a four game series against the Shorebirds tonight. West Virginia trails the all-time set by five losses with 35 wins over 75 games, and have only gone 9-22 at Delmarva since 2005. The Power took 10 of 18 last season, but only won once in five games at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. West Virginia and Delmarva will meet 12 times this season, including the final five days of the regular slate.
THREE DOWN & FOUR UP: Brandon Cumpton won his fourth straight decision with last Thursday's victory. The right-hander lost his first three starts of the season and held a 17.72 ERA after those appearances. Cumpton made one relief appearance and returned to the rotation when Tyler Waldron was placed on the disabled list in late April. Since his return to the rotation, Cumpton is 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA over 24 and 1/3 innings pitched.
SWEPT AWAY: West Virginia was swept over the past weekend in a four game series at Appalachian Power Park against Lakewood. This stretch marked the second time this season that the Power were swept, having lost all five game of a series at Kannapolis on April 18 to the 23.
SERIES STARTING STRUGGLES: The Power have a combined record of 3-8 in their opening games of the 11 series so far in 2011. West Virginia is 1-4 on the road in series openers, having taken their lone road win at Charleston on May 9 as that series began.
PINPOINT CONTROL: West Virginia pitchers have combined to walk just 86 batters this season, by far the fewest in the league. In fact, Power pitchers have walked the fewest batters in all of professional baseball. No other team in the Minors or Majors is even under 100 free passes issued.
POWER POINTS: Brandon Cumpton pitched seven and two-thirds innings last Thursday, the longest outing by any Power starter this season... The Power will make up the May 3 rainout against Greensboro on June 14 at 5:30 pm as part of a doubleheader.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 4-2 to Atlanta at PNC Park in 11 earlier today... Indianapolis lost 5-1 at Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre last night... Altoona was felled by Bowie 3-2... Bradenton blanked Lakeland 9-0. Brett Lorin, Eliecer Navarro, and Jason Erickson combined to two-hit the Tigers.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com.
Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
