Tonight: The first place Gnats, SAL affiliate of the New York Mets, begin a four-game series against their in-state rivals, the Augusta GreenJackets, SAL affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The Gnats return home for Military Appreciation Night on Sunday, May 29.
Monday: Four Savannah pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout in Savannah's 1-0 victory over the Greenville Drive. The Gnats won three of four games in the series to take first place away from Greenville.
Now Pitching: RHP Gonzalez Germen is scheduled to make his ninth appearance and his seventh start tonight. Germen has enjoyed a much better May than April. April, he had a 5.68 ERA (8 ER/12.2 IP), allowed a .351 opponents' batting average and had a K/BB ratio of 2.1 (15 K/7 BB). In May, he has a 2.63 ERA (7 ER/24 IP) with a .244 opponents' average and a K/BB of 4.7 (24 K/5 BB).
Germen spent most of the 2010 season with Kingsport in the Appalachian League where he was 2-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 61 innings over 10 starts. He struck out 54 and walked 11 for a healthy K/BB ratio of 4.9. He made two starts with Savannah to finish out the year. On August 27th, in his Savannah debut, in game two of a double-header, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and a shutout into the seventh. The Gnats are 2-4 when Germen starts and have supported him with 4.67 runs per game (28 runs/6 starts), the best run support of any starter.
Cory's Cuts: Cory Vaughn is second in the SAL in on-base percentage (.469), third in walks (28) and ninth in batting average (.331). He is the only player in the League to play in all of his team's games. Vaughn is hitting .360/.520/.520 with six doubles and two home runs, 18 walks and 18 strikeouts in 22 games in May.
Road Data: The Gnats are 9-14 on the road this year, 3-10 in April and 6-4 in May. At home, Savannah pitching has a 2.41 ERA and has given up 7 home runs in 198 innings (0.3 HR/9 IP). On the road, the team has a 4.52 ERA with 24 home runs in 195.1 IP (1.1 HR/9 IP).
Standings Update: The Gnats own a half-game lead over the Lexington Legends with 25 games to play in the First Half. Both the Gnats and Legends have won three games in a row.
Strong Arms: The Gnats have the SAL's best ERA (3.46) and WHIP (1.26). Savannah's 373 strikeouts are fourth in the SAL.
Soft Bats: The Gnats are last in the SAL in runs scored with 170, 28 behind Rome, which has scored the second-fewest. Savannah is last in the league in batting average (.238), 11th in on-base percentage (.320), and 13 th in slugging (.371). The Gnats are tied for fifth in walks (156) and seventh in home runs (32).
Home Helps: With their win Monday, the Gnats won their second-straight one-run game. Savannah improved to 7-6 in one-run games, 6-2 at home and 1-4 on the road. The Gnats are 6-5 in two-run games, 5-2 at home and 1-3 on the road.
Vs. Augusta: Tonight marks the beginning of the first of six series between the Gnats and GreenJackets. Ten of the games are scheduled for Augusta, and 11 for Savannah. The Gnats were 9-14 against Augusta last year, 4-7 at home and 5-7 on the road.
