Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

AUGUSTA, GA - Blake Forsythe singled home Cory Vaughn in the top of the 14th inning to give the Savannah Sand Gnats a 6-5 win over the Augusta GreenJackets Wednesday night in Augusta. The Gnats (23-22) have tied a season-high by winning their fourth straight game.

With the game tied at 5-5 in the 14th, SS Robbie Shields led off with a single. After RF Cory Vaughn hit into a fielders' choice, 3B Aderlin Rodriguez singled to put runners at first and second. Forsythe then singled cleanly into left field driving home Vaughn with the winning run. Forsythe was 2-3 with a double and three RBI Wednesday.

The Gnats held a 5-1 lead heading to the 7th inning stretch, but the GreenJackets (19-27) evened the game with four runs in the next two innings. In the 7th, Augusta's DH, Drew Bliery, homered off Savannah starter Gonzalez Germen to make the score 5-2. In the 8th, the GreenJackets scored three unearned runs to tie the game without the benefit of a base hit. Reliever Luis Rojas walked three batters in the inning and threw a wild pitch, and the Gnats committed two errors behind him, a throwing error by Shields and a fielding error on CF Darrell Ceciliani, to help Augusta even the game.

Savannah reliever Hamilton Bennett entered the game with runners at first and third and two outs in the eighth, and induced a called third strike to keep the game tied. The Gnats bullpen did not allow another hit until a lead off single in the bottom of the 13th. Bennett tossed 2.1 scoreless, hitless innings with two strikeouts, Josh Edgin added two scoreless frames with three whiffs, and Todd Weldon earned his first Savannah win by throwing the final two.

The Gnats scored three times in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Shields doubled to drive home Ceciliani with the game's first run, Forsythe brought home Shields with a sacrifice fly and Sam Honeckmade it 3-0 with single that plated Vaughn. Forsythe drove in his second run of the game with his second sacrifice fly of the game in the fifth inning for a 4-1 Savannah advantage.

The Gnats, looking for their fifth straight win, hand the ball to RHP Greg Peavey (3-2, 3.64) against RHP Shawn Sanford (1-3, 2.54) Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the broadcast on News/Talk 630 beginning at 7 pm.
