May 25, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws dropped the opener of their 7 game home stand 4-1 to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Wednesday afternoon. The BlueClaws led 1-0 for most of the game, but gave up 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning in the 4-1 loss. Lakewood was unsuccessful in their attempt at winning 7 straight for the first time since May 21-27, 2008, but the 6 game win streak has the BlueClaws back within fighting distance in the Northern Division Standings in the South Atlantic League.
BlueClaws SP Garett Claypool was fantastic throwing 7 innings and allowing just 1 run on 2 hits in the ballgame. He struck out a career high 11 batters in the game, which also a new high for a BlueClaws pitcher this season. At one point, Claypool retired 12 straight batters before plunking the lead off batter in the 7th inning Ryan Fisher. Fisher stole 2B, then scored on Brian McConkey's RBI Single to tie the game at 1-1. Claypool entered the game with the 2nd best ERA in the SAL among active pitchers at 2.48 behind only his teammate David Buchanan. The 7 inning, 1 run performance lowers Claypool's ERA to 2.30 on the year, but he was unable to pick up his 2nd win of the year.
Greensboro busted it open in the 9th inning off BlueClaws relievers LHP Jay Johnson and RHP Chase Johnson. Jay started the 8th and gave up 2 singles to lead off the inning, then walked Christian Yelich to load the bases with nobody out. Brian McConkey then grounded into a FC 1b-Home to force out Fisher at home and keep the game tied at 1-1. Greensboro Manager andy Hines then pinch hit the right-handed hitter Marcel Ozuna for left-handed hitting James Woosler. Blueclaws Manager Chris Truby then brought in RHP Chase Johnson to counter. Ozuna smacked a fastball from Chase into RF that was caught by Michael Dabbs for out #2. But, Mark Canha beat the throw home from Dabbs and scored to put Greensboro up 2-1. Jacob Realmuto then hit a ground rule double to score 2 more runs and make it 4-2 Greensboro.
Lakewood's only run of the game came in the 3rd inning on Zach Collier RBI Double that scored Cameron Rupp. Carlos Perdomo was thrown out trying to score on the play, and the BlueClaws were held scoreless the rest of the way. Thursday night the same 2 teams will rematch for the second game of the 4 game series. LHP Ervis Manzanillo (2-2, 4.62 ERA) will throw for Lakewood, and RHP Jheyson Manzueta (0-3, 6.06 ERA) will get the start for Greensboro. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm on Thursday.
