Charleston RiverDogs News Release

HICKORY, N.C. - Matt Thompson and the Hickory bullpen put the clamps down on the Charleston offense as the Crawdads blanked the RiverDogs, 3-0, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 1,441 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The RiverDogs dropped their fourth straight to fall to 20-26, while the Crawdads won their second in a row to improve to 25-20.

Charleston and Hickory each registered three hits over the first two innings, but neither could scratch across a run as Shane Greene (2-4) and Thompson (2-2) navigated their way around trouble.

The Crawdads struck for three tallies in the third, though, as Greene scuffled with his command, walking two and hitting a man to contribute to the damage.

Kellin Deglan walked, Jurickson Profar was plunked, and Tomas Telis loaded the bases on a groundball single to right. Josh Richmond stepped to the plate and put a crooked number on the scoreboard, scorching a double to left field to drive home Deglan and Profar for a 2-0 Hickory advantage.

Greene continued to search for his control, issuing a free pass to Andrew Clark to fill the sacs again. Christian Villanueva cashed in for the Crawdads, manufacturing a run with a sacrifice fly to Slade Heathcott in center field.

Fresh off 6.1 scoreless innings versus Greensboro in his last start, Thompson was just as good versus Charleston, shutting out the RiverDogs offense for 5.1 innings. The 21-year old Texan, a SAL Mid-Season All-Star in 2010, scattered six hits and fanned seven hitters to up his season total to 53.

An up-and-down season continued for Greene, who battled to give Manager Aaron Ledesma five innings despite walking a career high seven batters. The lanky, 6-4 right-hander yielded the three runs on five hits, while striking out three.

Nathan Forer and Manny Barreda kept the RiverDogs within shouting distance with three scoreless innings of relief, but the Crawdads relief corps picked up right where Thompson left off.

Joseph Van Meter and Ryan Rodebaugh allowed only a walk over the final 3.2 innings as Charleston went quietly into the night. Rodebaugh notched his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two in the process.

Southpaw Nik Turley (2-3, 3.22 ERA) heads to the bump for Charleston as the RiverDogs meet the Crawdads again on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Luke Jackson (0-0, 9.00 ERA) is expected to make his second start of the season for Hickory.
