Lexington Legends News Release

The Lexington Legends overcame an early deficit and overpowered the Rome Braves 15-10 on Wednesday in front of 8,214 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, the largest crowd of the 2011 season.

Rome scored four runs in the first inning. The first two batters, Matt Lipka and Edward Salcedo, were hit by pitches from Lexington starter Ruben Alaniz. After David Rohm reached on a fielder's choice and Robert Hefflinger popped out to second, Jakob Dalfonso singled on a pop fly to short left, scoring Salcedo. Christian Bethancourt then homered to center, and the Braves led 4-0.

The Legends got two back in their half of the first. Delino DeShields Jr. reached on an error leading off the inning. Walks to Jiovanni Mier and Mike Kvasnicka loaded the bases. Chris Wallace then grounded to third, and a throwing error by Salcedo allowed DeShields to score and Wallace to reach first. Enrique Hernandez then grounded out to first to score Mier.

Lexington got one run in the second on Mike Kvasnicka's RBI single, and then put six runs on the board in the third. Jhonny Medrano doubled home Daniel Adamson for the first run, and a single by Emilio King, a triple by DeShields and a single by Mier produced three more. Kvasnicka then hit his second home run of the year, a two-run shot over the left field bleachers, to put the Legends on top 9-6.

Two fielding errors by Salcedo in the fourth inning helped the Legends score four more runs on only two hits, and pushed their lead to 12-6. Rome got back in the game with four runs in the fifth. RBI singles by Hefflinger and Bethancourt, and a two-run single by Chris Garcia cut the Legends lead to 12-10. The Legends added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth on RBIs by Kvasnicka, Roberto Pena, and Adamson to put the game out of reach.

Alex Sogard (1-1) came out of the bullpen to get the win, throwing three scoreless innings. Rome starter Carlos Perez (3-5) was handed the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned, over two and two-thirds innings of work.

The Legends and Braves will play game two of the four game series Thursday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
