Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Blake Forsythe's RBI single in the 14th - the third Savannah Sand Gnats hit of the inning - scored Cory Vaughn from second to give the Sand Gnats a 6-5 win over the Augusta GreenJackets in 14 innings on Wednesday night. Savannah's win snaps the GreenJackets' three-game winning streak, their longest such streak of the year.
Trailing 5-1 at the seventh inning stretch, the GreenJackets scored four times in the next two innings to tie the game. Drew Biery led off the seventh with his fourth homer of the year to cut Savannah's lead down to three. In the eighth, the GreenJackets tied the game without getting a hit in the inning. Back-to-back walks opened the inning for Augusta. With one out, Biery's fly ball to left-center was dropped to allow one run to score. After an error loaded the bases, a wild pitch brought home Ehire Adrianza to make it a one-run game. Rafael Rodriguez grounded out to bring in the tying run. Devin Harris - the would-be, go-ahead run - was left standing at third as Bobby Haney struck out to end the inning.
Savannah jumped out to an early lead with three runs off Gaspar Santiago in the first inning. Robbie Shields doubled home a run, a Forsythe sacrifice fly brought home another and Sam Honeck's RBI single sent home the third. Sand Gnats starter Gonzalez Germen balked home a run after back-to-back GreenJackets singles in the third, but Savannah stretched the lead by one in each the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-1 lead.
The extra inning affair took a win away from Germen, who was very solid for the Sand Gnats. Germen threw seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five. He'd faced just two hitters over the minimum through five innings. Santiago fired four innings and allowed three unearned runs on three hits and two walks in his first start of the season.
The Sand Gnats stranded runners in scoring position in the tenth and 13th innings. The GreenJackets didn't get a hit in extras until Ryan Scoma led off the 13th with a single. Augusta had pinch-runner Raynor Campbell on at second as the tying run with two outs, but Todd Weldon struck out the final two hitters to end the game.
Weldon (1-1) struck out three in two scoreless innings to get the win for Savannah while Edward Concepcion (0-1) allowed the winning run in the 14th on three hits to take the loss for Augusta.
Shawn Sanford (1-3, 2.54) takes the mound for Augusta tomorrow to face Greg Peavey (3-2, 3.64) as the GreenJackets close in on their one-millionth fan under Ripken Baseball ownership. That lucky fan will win a trip for four to Disneyworld, courtesy of Augusta Vascular Center. First pitch will come at 7:05 on Thursday with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
