Asheville Tours Hagerstown in Series Opener

Hagerstown, MD- The Asheville Tourists (21-25) took a tour of Municipal Stadium on Wednesday night, downing the Hagerstown Suns (28-17) by a score of 4-1. The winning pitcher, RHP Josh Slaats (1-1), tossed 5.0 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits, while walking five and fanning four.

The Tourists drove in the first run in the 1st inning on an RBI single from first round draft pick, RF Kyle Parker, a former quarterback at Clemson University. CF Rafael Ortega, who led off the game with a single lashed back up the middle, came in to score.

An additional Asheville run was plated by SS Joey Wong on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field in the 2nd stanza, scoring LF Chandler Laurent, who doubled up the left field line. Wong had a big 3-for-3 night at the plate with two RBI and a double and a stolen base.

The Suns would get the bases loaded with no outs in the 3rd frame but only scored one run on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of RF Kevin Keyes.

Suns RHP A.J. Cole (0-3), who was dealt the loss, went 4.2 innings and surrendered four runs, two earned, on seven hits. Cole walked one and struck out five.

The Tourists tacked on individual runs of insurance in the 4th and 5th stanzas when Wong lined an single the other way to left field. LF Chandler Laurent came in to score after he reached on an error by SS Jason Martinson. An inning later, C Bryce Massanari hit a titanic solo home run blast to dead center field towards Cannon Street to put the Tourists on top 4-1, the eventual final score.

RHP Juan Perez (9 SV) came into the game in the 9th inning and slammed the door shut, earning a 1-2-3 perfect box.

The Suns will host the Tourists for a Thirsty Thursday presented by: Break Away 2 Sports Lounge tomorrow night. First pitch is slated for 6:35pm with post-game entertainment to include a live performance by South of Sobriety brought to the Suns faithful by Break Away 2 and Maxed Out Entertainment. The Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-Game Show on the radio flagship of the Hagerstown Suns, WJEJ AM 1240 begins at 6:20pm. Starting pitchers are TBD.
