LAST NIGHT: West Virginia lost 18-1 to Augusta. The GreenJackets tallied eight runs in the second, four in the fifth, and six in the seventh for all their offense. West Virginia's lone run crossed in the first on a Jose Hernandez double. Brett Lorin allowed the second inning offense and took his third loss of the season.
ON THE RECORD: On Thursday night, West Virginia allowed a season-high 18 runs in a 17 run loss to Augusta, marking the largest margin of defeat in franchise history. The Power had not lost by more than 14 in any game dating back to 2005, including earlier this month when Phillip Irwin took the loss in the 17-3 final versus Lakewood and on May 17, 2005 when Asheville beat Yovanni Gallardo and West Virginia 14-0.
MASTERS OF AUGUSTA: The GreenJackets hold the edge in the all-time series between West Virginia and Augusta 19-11, and the Jackets have won 14 of 18 games played at Lake Olmstead Stadium since 2005. At Appalachian Power Park, West Virginia leads the set 7-5, but Augusta isn't slated to appear in Charleston during this or the 2011 season.
FIRST OF ITS KIND: West Virginia's loss Monday was the first time this season that the opposition won a game with less than three runs scored. The Power are now 24-1 when holding their opponents to zero, one, or two runs in a game. When the opposition scores between 3-7 runs, West Virginia is 30-46, and when they score eight or more in a game, the Power are 4-24.
VASQUEZ JOINS ACTIVE ROSTER: The Pittsburgh Pirates added infielder Andy Vasquez to West Virginia's active roster on Monday. The switch-hitter batted .220 for State College during 16 games this season, with two home runs and six runs batted in. Vasquez was signed as an international free agent on September 4, 2006, but will make his South Atlantic League debut when he first appears for the Power. No counter move was needed as West Virginia had been one man shy of a full compliment since Melkin Laureano was placed on the disabled list on August 4.
STREAK STOPPED: David Rubinstein's ten-game hitting streak dating back to August 16 was snapped with an 0-4 performance on Thursday night. It was the fourth streak of six games or more for the All-Star outfielder. This recent streak has seen Rubinstein reach with exactly one base hit in each of those ten games, going 10-36 with two home runs and six runs batted in. The Appalachian State product has appeared in 105 games this season, despite the fact he did not become an everyday player until mid-May.
POWER POINTS: Evan Chambers has not played since getting hit in the head by a pitch on 8/17... Jose Hernandez leads the club with nine games played this season where he has reached on three or more hits... The eight runs allowed in the second inning on Thursday were the most surrendered in any inning this season... Phillip Irwin is 0-2 this month with an ERA of 8.57 over 21 innings after going 3-0 in July with an earned run average of 1.64 over 38 and a third innings pitched...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was off last night and opens a series in Milwaukee tonight... Indianapolis beat Toledo 2-1... Altoona beat Richmond 5-1 in a rain-shortened game... Bradenton's swept a doubleheader with St. Lucie, winning 20-1 and 4-1... State College knocked off Mahoning Valley 10-1.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
