Offense Propels Braves to Win

Rome, GA - A six run fifth inning propelled the Braves as they defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 9-3 Friday night in front of 2,986 fans at State Mutual Stadium.

Greensboro took the early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Kyle Skipworth walked and later scored on a Chad Cregar RBI double.

Grasshopper's starter, Edgar Olmos, held the Braves to two hits over the first four innings until Rome's bats came alive with a six run fifth to take the 6-1 lead. Christian Bethancourt led off with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a Todd Cunningham sacrifice bunt. Chris Curley doubled to plate Bethancourt to tie the game. Curley advanced to third on a Jace Whitmer single and later scored on a Bobby Rauh sacrifice bunt. Kyle Rose was hit by a pitch to load the bases then a walk to Phil Gosselin plated Whitmer. After a pitching change, Hefflinger hit a two RBI base hit to score Rauh and Rose. A Bethancourt walk loaded the bases again followed by a Cunningham walk to score Gosselin for the sixth run.

The Braves added three insurance runs in the seventh highlighted by a two RBI double by Joey Terdoslavich. Greenville put two runs on the scoreboard in the ninth but Rome held on for the 9-3 victory.

Dan Jurik (1-0) earns his first win of the season for Rome while Greensboro's Edgar Olmos (3-8) picks up the loss.
