Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Jesus Brito's two-out single through the left side of the infield gave the West Virginia Power the eventual winning run in a 3-2, 11-inning win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Friday night from Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Power victory snaps a three-game GreenJackets winning streak.
In the 11th, Daniel Rubenstein led off with a single against Jose Valdez (4-3) and moved to second on a groundout. Nick Liles came up throwing from left field on Brito's single, but threw high to allow Rubenstein to score the go-ahead run. All told, all five runs in the game scored with two outs and the GreenJackets have now scored 20 of their 24 runs in the series with two outs in an inning. The Jackets were retired in order in their half of the 11th.
For the third straight game, the Power struck first. Chris Heston allowed a walk and four hits in the second inning and with two outs Bengie Gonzalez hit a bases-loaded single that scored a pair and gave West Virginia an early two-run lead. Heston settled down after that and fired seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out eight.
The GreenJackets cut the West Virginia lead in half with Tommy Joseph's RBI double to right field in the sixth inning. Ryan Cavan's headfirst slide avoided the tag to cut the Power advantage to 2-1. Hustle tied the game in the eighth for the GreenJackets as Chris Dominguez singled to open the frame and then stole second on the first pitch to Cavan. With two outs, Dominguez broke for third and scored when catcher Ramon Cabrera's throw to third sailed into left field, tying the game at two.
Dominguez's scamper around the bases ruined a would-be win for Power righty Phillip Irwin, who struck out eight and allowed one run on four hits and a walk in six innings.
Augusta had the winning run at second with two outs in the ninth and tenth innings, but couldn't get the job done. Kyle McPherson (9-9) walked two, but didn't allow a hit in two scoreless innings of relief to get the win for West Virginia.
Zack Wheeler (2-3, 3.62) takes the ball for Augusta in their final home game of the 2010 regular season on Saturday to face West Virginia's Quinton Miller (3-4, 5.05) as the GreenJackets attempt to take three of four from the Power and break even on the homestand. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
Fans can purchase seats to all home games by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
