Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats swept a doubleheader from the Charleston RiverDogs by scores of 5-3 and 2-1 Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats bats busted out for a pair of home runs in game one, while Gonzalez German, in his South Atlantic League debut, tossed a complete game three-hitter in the nightcap.
In game one, the Gnats (26-34/68-62) trailed 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth. 2B Alonzo Harris led off the fifth with a single and one batter later, SS Robbie Shields lined a home run over the left field wall to put Savannah in front 3-2. After a DH Jordan Abruzzo single, R.J. Harris clubbed another home run to left giving the Gnats a 5-2 lead. It was the second time this year that the Gnats have hit two home runs in an inning and the first time in front of the home fans at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Gnats starter Collin McHugh gave up single runs in each of the first two innings, but settled in to finish five innings for the win, his fifth of the year. Thanks to double plays in the third and fifth innings, he faced the minimum three batters in each of his final three frames. The RiverDogs (30-31/61-69) put the tying runs on base in the seventh, but closer Brandon Sage shut the door for his sixth save.
The story in game two was the dominant debut from Gonzalez Germen. Promoted Friday from rookie level Kingsport in the Appalachian League, German was perfect through 4.2 innings and took a shutout into the seventh until 1B Luke Murton's one-out solo home run. The 22-year old Germen struck out seven without issuing a walk, and gave up just the one run on three hits in the complete game win.
The Gnats scored their only two runs in game two in the sixth inning without the benefit of a base hit. In the sixth inning, Charleston pitchers walked five batters, hit one and bounced two wild pitches that allowed runs to score.
The Gnats and RiverDogs finish their four-game series Saturday at 6:05 pm when Savannah RHP Armando Rodriguez (6-9, 3.31) takes on RHP Mike Gipson (0-1, 9.00). Gates open at 5 pm and the radio pregame show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 6 pm.
Saturday Night Fireworks FIREWORKS presented by KIX96 follow the game. Every fan who attends Saturday's game will be entered in a raffle to win a pair of University of Georgia Football tickets. Fans who buy a scorecard will pick up five more raffle tickets.
