THURSDAY: West Virginia lost 7-6 on Thursday at Greensboro. The Grasshoppers held a 6-2 lead after seven innings, but the Power rallied to tie by scoring four in the eighth. Greensboro regained the lead with a run against Zach Foster in the bottom of the inning. Foster took the loss and Jose Hernandez hit his fifth home run of the year.
HISTORY WITH THE 'HOPPERS: The Power won the 2009 season series with the Grasshoppers 9-5. West Virginia won six of eight games at Appalachian Power Park and split a six-game set at Greensboro. The Power have gone 22-12 at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro since 2005, and hold a 24-13 edge at home.
LOOKING BACK TO LOOK AHEAD: During their first season as a Pirates affiliate, the Power went 27-43 during the first half of the season. The club hit .254 during the first 70 games and held a staff ERA of 4.66. West Virginia finished the '09 campaign with a .262 club average, a staff ERA of 4.18, and a 67-70 record for the year by going 40-27 in the second half. The 2010 edition of the Power hit .235 during the front half of the year, held a staff earned run average of 4.28, and finished 31-39.
HELD HITLESS: Jarek Cunningham extended his current hitting streak to 18 straight with sixth inning double. The second baseman is batting .371 during this stretch, which dates back to May 31, and has seen his average climb from .243 to .282 with 26 hits in 70 at bats. He has also hit three home runs and driven in 13 runs over his last 18 games. Cunningham's current streak is the longest active run in the league, and had the second longest current streak across all of Minor League Baseball going in to play Thursday.
ROSTER MOVE: Jhonathan Ramos was transferred off the West Virginia roster yesterday and placed on the State College Spikes roster. Ramos made his South Atlantic League debut in May and appeared in eight games for the Power, going 0-1 with an 8.40 ERA. Ramos made two starts in his final two appearances with West Virginia, and the southpaw was 0-1 with a 12.85 earned run average in those two games.
LONG TIME GONE: Thursday's loss to Greensboro was the longest game that West Virginia has played in this season. The second half opener lasted three hours and 25 minutes, surpassing the previous marathon of Opening Night at Savannah, which lasted three hours and 16 minutes.
POWER POINTS: Gabriel Alvarado was suspended by the South Atlantic League during the All-Star break and will miss the first three games of the second half. Alvarado became the first Power player to be ejected from a game this season when he was ushered off by umpire Jonathan Bailey during the fourth inning after an altercation with Destin Hood on June 18... David Rubinstein has hit safely in each of his last eight games. Rubinstein has reached base safely by hit or walk in his last 23 consecutive road contests, dating back to April 25 at Kannapolis... The Power are 2-10 in Thursday games this season.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
