Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - The Gnats used a pair of big innings to cruise by the Asheville Tourists 9-0 Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah (1-1/43-29) scored five times in the third inning and three times in the fifth to even their second half record at 1-1. RF Cesar Puello had a big night, going 3-4 with two doubles, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI.

The Gnats sent ten men to the plate in their five-run third. After SS Wilfredo Tovar and CF Pedro Zapata began the inning with singles, new CF RJ Harris drove a single through the right side to bring home Tovar and give the Gnats a 1-0 lead. 3B Jefry Marte then ripped a two-run double down the left field line scoring Zapata and Harris. Puello's single into center field scored Marte to put the Gnats ahead 4-0. Puello later scored on a throwing error.

Savannah starter Jimmy Fuller worked around lead-off runners in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to toss six shutout frames. He struck out four and walked one while improving to 7-2 while lowering his ERA to 1.81. The Gnats' bullpen of Gabriel Zavala, Luis Rojas and Sammy Martinez combined to fire three scoreless, hitless innings in relief of Fuller.

The Gnats added three runs in the fifth. Puello ripped an RBI double down the third base line and scored on 1B Travis Ozga's single into right. In his first game in a Gnats' uniform, Ozga was 1-2 with a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Ozga scored on a Zapata single into center. Zapata was 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games.
