Hickory Crawdads News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Hickory Crawdads starter RHP Joe Wieland tossed a complete game shutout against the Hagerstown Suns, as the 'Dads won, 4-0, before 3,588 fans at Municipal Stadium on Friday night. Wieland becomes the first Crawdad to hurl a complete game shutout since RHP Derek Hankins on August 6, 2005.
Wieland (7-4, 3.34 ERA) didn't allow a baserunner until the bottom of the fifth when he walked 1B Justin Bloxom to leadoff the inning. Wieland dealt 5.1 hitless innings before surrendering a single to C Sandy Leon in the sixth inning. In his nine scoreless innings, Wieland allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out five for the win.
Hickory (41-31) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning against Hagerstown starter LHP Mitchell Clegg (8-1, 2.25 ERA). In his first game since being placed on the disabled list on May 6, DH Cody Podraza doubled off the wall in left field and was bunted over to third on the sacrifice by 2B Travis Adair. 3B Matt West then lofted a sac fly to deep center field to plate Podraza from third, giving the 'Dads an early, 1-0, lead.
The Crawdads extended their lead over the Suns (37-35) in the seventh. LF Cristian Santana led off the inning with an infield single to 3B Steven Souza. C Zach Zaneski then hit into a fielder's choice, but Souza's throw to second sailed into the outfield, allowing Santana to reach third with Zaneski on at first. After RF Joe Bonadonna walked to load the bases with none out, 1B Mike Ortiz drove home Santana from third with an RBI fielder's choice, retiring Bonadonna at second. SS Edwin Garcia kept the rally going by bringing in Zaneski from third on a sac fly to left to increase the 'Dads lead to 3-0.
Hickory added a final tally in the eighth. 3B Matt West was hit by a pitch from Suns reliever RHP Shane Erb, the second time in the game that West had been plunked. One out later, Santana doubled home West from first to account for the final run in the Crawdads 4-0 win. Clegg was handed his first loss of the season, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out three over seven innings.
