Suns Drop 4-0 Against Crawdads

The Hagerstown Suns (37-35, 1-1) fell to the Hickory Crawdads (41-31, 1-1) 4-0 Saturday night in front of the seventh sell-out crowd of the season at Municipal Stadium.

The Crawdads took the lead in the top of the sixth as Cody Podraza started off with a double. With Podraza on third after a sacrifice bunt by Travis Adair, Matthew West brought in the run with a sacrifice fly to center giving Hickory the lead 1-0.

Hickorys bats kept going in the seventh as left fielder Cristian Santana singled to third. After a throwing error by the Suns, Zach Zaneski reached on a forced attempt. With bases loaded after a walk from Joseph Banadonna, first baseman Michael Ortiz grounded out scoring Santana. The third run brought in was off a sacrifice fly bringing in Zaneski the Crawdads lead 3-0.

Hagerstowns bats were swinging little by little but it was not enough as the Hickory added another run in the eighth. After a pitching change, third baseman Matthew West reached after getting hit by a pitch. After double by Cristian Santana, West scored expanding the lead 4-0.

The Suns starting pitcher Mitchell Clegg (8-1) took the loss pitching seven innings with three strikeouts giving up three runs. Shane Erb replaced Clegg in the eighth giving up one run with one strikeout.

Hickorys starting pitcher Joe Wieland pitched all nine innings giving up zero runs with five strikeouts.

The Suns will play the third game of their five-game series against the Crawdads Saturday night at Municipal Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
