Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

Charleston, WV (August 5, 2009) - The West Virginia Power held a 3-0 lead through seven innings of Wednesday night's game at Appalachian Power Park, but surrendered five runs in the final two frames and fell 5-3 to the Kannapolis Intimidators in the second game of the series.

Wasted opportunities haunted West Virginia as they did one night earlier. Three times they had their first two batters reach base, and came away with nothing. The Power scored their first two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on back-to-back solo homeruns from Quincy Latimore and Calvin Anderson. It was Anderson's first homerun since July 10th against Delmarva.

Greg Picart started the seventh inning with a triple and scored on Robbie Grossman's two-out single to left-center field. The Intimidators began their comeback in the top of the eighth inning. Kenny Williams started the inning with a single and scored along with Joe Persichina on Sergio Morales's double down the left field line. Jon Gilmore sent the very next pitch from Brian Leach over the wall in left field for his fourth homer of the season to give Kannapolis the lead for good. They added an insurance run in the ninth inning on Williams's double that scored Eduardo Escobar.

James Albury (1-0) allowed a three runs on nine hits over seven innings and struck out six in a winning effort. Dan Remenowsky (18) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to snag the save. Brian Leach (4-2) allowed five runs on five hits over four innings and was tagged with the loss. Gabriel Alvarado started the game for West Virginia and pitched five scoreless innings, while allowing just five hits and struck out two.

West Virginia fell to 46-59 overall, and 19-16 in the second half after the loss, while the Intimidators improved to 60-48 overall and 23-15 in the second half after the win. Quincy Latimore, Greg Picart and Adenson Chourio all turned in two hit games for the Power. It was Chourio's fourth multi-hit game over his last five, and extended his hitting streak to six games. Starling Marte singled in his third at bat to extend his hitting streak to 18 straight games and has reached in all 30 games with the Power.

West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. The Power will start right hander Quinton Miller (1-2, 5.28) and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Nevin Griffith (1-3, 3.99). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
