Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - With men at the corners and one out in the ninth inning of a scoreless game, Francisco Peguero bounced a high chopper over first baseman Neall French's head to score Vladimir Frias from third, handing the Augusta GreenJackets a 1-0 walkoff victory over the Charleston RiverDogs.
Peguero's bouncer provided the sixth walkoff win for the GreenJackets this season and their first win in a 1-0 game. It was the first time they'd even played a nine-inning 1-0 game this year.
A pitchers' duel erupted early on between Ari Ronick and Jairo Heredia, with the two trading zero-for-zero. Ronick fired seven shutout innings of three-hit baseball without a walk and with seven strikeouts. Heredia one-upped him - throwing five perfect innings before allowing a single to Wendell Fairley to open the sixth. He'd leave after 5.2 innings due to pitch count restrictions without allowing a run or walk on two hits with seven strikeouts.
The Jackets put runners on in the sixth and seventh but could do no damage against the Charleston 'pen. Ryan Verdugo came on for an injured Justin Fitzgerald, who left after just two pitches in the eighth, to keep the RiverDogs off the scoreboard. Verdugo (2-0) fired two scoreless frames of no-hit relief with a walk while fanning four.
Off Gabriel Tatis (0-1) in the ninth, Vladimir Frias walked to leadoff the inning and advanced to third on Juan Perez's one-out single. Tatis allowed just the winning run in 2.2 innings of relief on three hits and a walk while striking out one.
Andrew Reichard (2-2, 3.52) will take the ball for the GreenJackets in game three of the series as Augusta tries to win their third straight. He'll face Trent Lare (0-2, 4.63) as the five-game series and nine-game homestand continues on the second-to-last Thirsty Thursday of the season. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
