Greensboro hops by Crawdads, 5-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads fell, 5-2, in the second game of their four-game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, before 4,528 fans at NewBridge Bank Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Grasshoppers (13-25, 50-58) got out to a quick start with a run on three straight singles to begin the bottom of the first against RHP Joe Wieland (3-3) and the Crawdads. LF Jeremy Synan recorded the RBI on a line drive single to short, scoring RF Kevin Mattison and putting the Grasshoppers ahead, 1-0.

The Crawdads (20-18, 53-54) came back with a pair of runs in the top of the third against LHP Brad Hand (6-11), erasing the one-run deficit and taking a one-run lead. SS Leury Garcia and CF Cody Podraza laid down back-to-back bunt singles with one out, and then advanced to third and second, respectively on a ground out. With two on and two out, 1B Erik Morrison belted a double to right-center field, bringing in both runners and putting the Crawdads up, 2-1.

Greensboro responded with a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth, moving back in front, 3-2. 1B Ryan Keedy doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a single by 2B Daniel Pertusati, putting runners on the corners with no one out. Keedy came in on an RBI single by DH Kyle Skipworth and Pertusati later scored on a sacrifice bunt by SS Emilio Ontiveros.

The Grasshoppers tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth inning against RHP Cody Eppley, when Keedy hit a two-run homer to put Greensboro ahead by three runs. RHP Pete Andrelczyk dealt a scoreless ninth to close the 5-2 win for the Grasshoppers. Wieland was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while Hand earned the win and Andrelczyk registered the save for Greensboro.
