Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-2 with a walk-off win on Wednesday at Appalachian Power Park. Evan Chambers singled home Jesus Brito with one out in the ninth to give the Power their first walk-off win of the season.
Delmarva took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against West Virginia starter Kyle McPherson. Tyler Kolodny's single with runners on first and third gave the Shorebirds the early advantage.
West Virginia tied the game in the second on a sac fly by Ramon Cabrera, but Delmarva regained the lead in the fourth as Kolodny scored on an error. From there, McPherson and the Power bullpen settled in. The West Virginia starter struck out 10 batters over five innings, setting a new single game high by any Power pitcher.
In the seventh, West Virginia tied the game at two. With Brito on second, Bengie Gonzalez singled and drove in the tying run.
Brito led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and advanced to second when Gonzalez walked. Evan Chambers drove a 2-1 pitch from the Shorebirds Jake Smith to deep right centerfield, allowing Brito to score the winning run without a throw to the plate.
Zack Foster notched the win for West Virginia, while Smith (3-1) took the loss. Delmarva outhit West Virginia 9-8, including three hits by Kolodny and two by Steve Bumbry. The Power received multi-hit games from Brito and David Rubinstein, and took three out of four during the series. These teams will meet against in Charleston in late June and early July.
West Virginia opens a four game series at Lakewood on Thursday at 6:35 pm. Melkin Laureano and Jonathan Pettibone get the starts for the Power and BlueClaws, respectively.
