Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (21-18) beat the Asheville Tourists (14-23) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday behind a stellar effort from starting pitcher Trevor Holder.
The Suns got on the board first, with a single tally in the bottom of the first inning. Hagerstown second baseman Francisco Soriano singled on a ground ball to Asheville's shortstop Joey Wong to start off the inning. After a wild pitch moved Soriano to second base, Suns first baseman Justin Bloxom singled up the middle, driving in Soriano and giving the Suns a 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last long, however, as the Tourists even the score in the top of the second inning. Left fielder Kent Matthes led off the top of the second inning with a home run to center field, his first of the season.
Hagerstown retook the lead in the next half-inning. With DH J.P. Ramirez on base from a throwing error by Asheville's third baseman Helder Velazquez, Suns right fielder J.R. Higley doubled on a line drive to left allowing Ramirez to score.
The 2-1 lead was enough for Holder (3-1) who went seven innings, allowing just one run and striking out four. Rob Wort took over in the seventh, giving up one hit and striking out two to earn his first save of the season.
For the Tourists, Chris Balcom-Miller (0-1) got the start and pitched well, striking out five in five innings of work. Though he took the loss, only one of the two runs against his was earned.. Chad Rose and Paul Bargas combined to toss the final three innings for the Tourists and did not allow a run.
The game was played in front of the second sellout of the Suns eight-game homestand and the fourth sellout of the season. 5,344 fans attended the Education Day morning game at Municipal Stadium
The Suns next series is on the road at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium against the Delmarva Shorebirds starting at 7:05 p.m. The Suns will play a four game series in Salisbury, MD before heading to Lakewood, NJ for four more against the Lakewood Blueclaws.
