Hickory Crawdads News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Hickory Crawdads pulled off the series split in Kannapolis to wrap up their eight-game roadtrip with a 7-3 win before 995 fans at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium against the Intimidators on Wednesday night. Hickory holds on to first place in the Northern Division with a two game lead over the Lakewood BlueClaws.
For the third game in a row, the Crawdads (24-16) jumped out in front in the first. With two outs in the inning, CF Miguel Velazquez and LF Jared Prince hit back-to-back singles to put runners on base for DH Vinny DiFazio. A wild pitch by Kannapolis starter RHP Cameron Bayne (2-6, 4.78 ERA) allowed Velazquez to score from third for the 'Dads first run. DiFazio then smacked a single up the middle to bring in Prince to expand the lead to 2-0.
Hickory added another run in the second on an RBI double by 3B Matt West, plating C Leonel De Los Santos from first to push the lead to 3-0. However, Kannapolis (21-19) picked up a run of their own in the third inning when C Miguel Gonzalez tripled to left and was singled in by 3B Rafael Vera to cut the advantage to 3-1.
The Crawdads broke the game open in the fifth inning. After consecutive singles by West and Velazquez, Prince singled home West from third. Later in the inning, RF Ed Koncel smashed a double to left to plate Velazquez and Prince and 2B/SS Edwin Garcia followed with a double down the left field line to bring in Koncel, pushing the 'Dads lead to 7-1.
Hickory starter RHP Matt Thompson (4-1, 2.70 ERA) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while fanning eight in 6.2 innings pitched to pick up the win. LHP Miguel De Los Santos made his Crawdads debut in the ninth inning, giving up a run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout. Bayne was handed the loss for the Intimidators.
