Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, Ga. - Rome scored 11 runs in the first three innings and stroked a season-high 18 base hits in smacking the Charleston RiverDogs, 12-5, in South Atlantic League action at State Mutual Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory, Rome improves to 16-23 in completing a four-game sweep of Charleston for the first time since August 2008 after getting swept by the RiverDogs in Charleston from April 24-27. The RiverDogs now sit at 17-23 overall having lost six games in a row for the first time since April 2007.
Rome took a 1-0 lead in the first against Charleston's Kelvin Perez on Robert Hefflinger's RBI groundout.
The RiverDogs went to work with two outs in the second, when DeAngelo Mack doubled and scored on Kelvin Castro's RBI triple to tie the score at 1-1.
However, that tie did not last long, as the Braves scored four times in the second - all unearned due to a Charleston error -- for a 5-1 lead. Chris Curley's sacrifice fly was followed by consecutive RBI singles from Jordan Kreke and Hefflinger. Jake Hanson capped the inning's offense with a RBI double.
Six more runs were posted in the bottom of the third growing the lead to 11-1. Matt Weaver singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on an error by Castro. That set off the Rome explosion, as L.V. Ware lifted a sacrifice fly, and Hefflinger, Hanson and Christian Bethancourt all added RBI doubles.
Perez (2-2) lasted a season-low 2.2 innings allowing 11 runs - two earned - on 12 hits.
Charleston trimmed the deficit to 11-3 in the fourth, when J.R. Murphy scored on a wild pitch and Ray Kruml drove in a run on an infield single.
Kyle Higashioka blooped a two-run single to right field in the fifth working the margin to 11-5.
Weaver concluded the scoring for Rome with a RBI fielder's choice in seventh inning for a 12-5 score.
Rome's Brett DeVall (1-2) was far from effective, but picked up his first win of the year, surrendering five runs on 11 hits in 5.0 innings. David Hale pitched 4.0 scoreless innings of relief to notch his first save of the year.
Jimmy Paredes led Charleston's 13-hit attack going 3-for-5, while Murphy and Kelvin Castro each had a pair of hits.
For Rome, Hefflinger finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI and ended the four-game series with seven doubles, 10 RBI and seven runs scored. Hanson registered four hits with three RBI, while Kreke and Bethancourt racked three hits apiece. The 18 hits for the Braves is the most allowed by the RiverDogs in 2010.
Charleston returns home to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Thursday to start a four-game series
against the Savannah Sand Gnats, a New York Mets affiliate, scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The RiverDogs will pitch southpaw Shaeffer Hall (2-2, 2.04 ERA), while the Sand Gnats plan to start the series with left-hander Darin Gorski (1-1, 3.34 ERA).
