Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

In an important series-ending game, the Hickory Crawdads used timely hitting to defeat the Kannapolis Intimidators by the score of 7-3 to earn a series split and remain three games adrift of Kannapolis, where they started the series.

For the fourth time in as many starts, Cameron Bayne struggled at home and allowed two runs on four straight two-outs hits to take an early lead. The Crawdads (24-16) added another in the second to go up 3-0.

The Intimidators (21-19) got a run back in the third as Miguel Gonzalez tripled and was singled home by Rafael Vera, the first of the Intimidators hits with runners in scoring position after failing a few times in the first two innings. However, the game would not remain this close. The Crawdads opened up the game in the fifth off Bayne (2-6) scoring four times, two on a two-run double by Ed Koncel to see him exit the game after five, allowing ten hits and seven runs.

The Intimidators answered with a solo home run in the seventh by Kyle Colligan to cut it to 7-2 but that was all the runs the team could muster off starter Matt Thompson who went 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs while striking out eight. The Intimidators added another run in the ninth with and RBI-double by Daniel Wagner to close the scoring at 7-3.

Zach Piccola had his finest outing of the season as he pitched three in relief of Bayne, allowing just a walk and striking out seven.

The Intimidators split the series with the Crawdads as they now travel to Asheville to play the Tourists in a four game series which begins at 7:05 on Thursday night.
