Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 9-6 on Monday evening at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia's offense scored at least one run in seven different innings and avoided a three-game sweep by Greensboro with the victory.
The Grasshoppers gained a 2-0 lead in the first off Power starter Zac Fuesser, but West Virginia rallied in the home half of the inning to tie the game. Alen Hanson scored on a base hit from Dan Gamache and Junior Sosa crossed home on a sac fly by Willy Garcia to even the score.
The Power held a 4-2 lead after two innings thanks to Carlos Mesa's second home run of the season and a run-scoring single by Junior Sosa. Greensboro, though, scored four times against Fuesser in the top of the third to regain the edge at 6-4.
After Mesa drove in a run in the bottom of the third, Hanson led off the fourth with a single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at six.
In the fifth, Jodaneli Carvajal walked and scored the eventual winning run on a base hit by Elias Diaz. The Power would score a run in the sixth and one more in the eighth to provide some insurance and close the scoring.
Fuesser pitched four innings and did not factor in the decision; the fifth time in five starts that the lefty has not gotten a win or a loss. Orlando Castro (1-2) threw five innings of shutout relief and gained his first win of the season. Johnny Omahen (1-2) took the loss for Greensboro after allowing the fifth inning run on Diaz's single.
Eight of the nine batters in the Power's offense had at least on hit, keyed by four singles from Gregory Polanco and three hits by Hanson.
West Virginia has an off day Tuesday and travels to Asheville to starta four game, three day series on Wednesday at 5:35 pm. The Power and Tourists will play a doubleheader Wednesday to make up a postponed game from April 18. West Virginia's next homestand starts on May 10 and will see the Charleston RiverDogs and Lexington Legends each visit Appalachian Power Park for the first time this season.
POWER RECORD: 8-16
