Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets used solid starting pitching, consistent offense and four Hagerstown Suns errors to extinguish the Suns on Monday night with a 7-1 win. With the win, the GreenJackets took two of three from the Suns and finished their first winning homestand of the season.
Paul Davis (2-0) allowed just three hits in five scoreless innings during his first start of the year. After allowing a one-out single in the first inning, Davis retired 12 straight before giving up back-to-back hits with one out in the fifth. Davis settled down to get the final two outs of the inning, including a fine athletic play by Davis himself to get the third out of the inning and finish his five-inning stint. In five innings, Davis didn't walk anyone and struck out a career-best six hitters - giving the GreenJackets only their fifth start of the year that lasted five innings or longer.
Augusta got a run in the first as Shawn Payne doubled with two outs and scored on Ben Thomas's RBI single. The GreenJackets got another in the second as a bases-loaded wild pitch scored Joe Staley to put Augusta up 2-0. In the fourth, Kelby Tomlinson's RBI single pushed the lead to three runs. The lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth when Payne walked, took second on an error, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Suns starter Taylor Hill (3-1) took his first loss of the season in his second start of the year, firing four innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.
Hagerstown put up their lone run against the GreenJackets bullpen in the sixth inning. With help from an error and a passed ball, the Suns had two men in scoring position with one out when Matthew Skole's RBI single put the Suns on the board. Adrian Nieto followed with a comebacker off Adalberto Mejia's shin that ended Mejia's night and loaded the bases. Steven Neff came on to strike out the next two hitters and leave the bases full as part of his 2.2 innings of scoreless one-hit baseball.
The GreenJackets added three unearned runs in the eighth inning on Tomlinson's second RBI single of the day, Jose Cuevas getting hit by a pitch with the bases full and a bases loaded walk to Payne. Keith Bilodeau sealed the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Six of the seven Augusta runs on Monday night scored with two outs - a day after the GreenJackets won 2-0 on a pair of two-out runs.
The GreenJackets have Tuesday off before hitting the road for a seven-game road trip that begins in Kannapolis against the Intimidators. The GreenJackets send lefty Edwin Escobar (1-1, 1.88) to the mound against righty Kevin Vance (1-0, 1.42). First pitch on Wednesday comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Thursday May 10th to open a series with the Greenville Drive on the second Thirsty Thursday of the year, presented by The Library, with dollar soft drinks and draft beers available.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
