Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads struck for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 6-4 win against the Charleston RiverDogs, before 2,143 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday afternoon . The 'Dads won the series, two-games-to-one, with 27 runs scored through the three games.
For the third straight game, it was Charleston (16-7) that scored first. 2B Angelo Gumbs led off the top of the second inning against RHP Santo Perez (W, 1-1) with a single and swiped second base. 1B Reymond Nunez followed with an RBI single, plating Gumbs for the 1-0 lead.
The RiverDogs doubled the early lead with another run in the top of the third. SS Cito Culver started the frame with a double and raced home one out later on an RBI single from RF Tyler Austin, making it 2-0. Perez dug in from that point on, not allowing another run through the remainder of his six-inning start.
After being kept hitless through the first five innings, the Crawdads (16-8) did all of their damage in the bottom of the sixth inning against RHP Bryan Mitchell (L, 1-2) and RHP Ben Paullus. 2B Luis Sardinas started the rally with a walk and moved to second on a single from LF Chris Grayson. 3B Drew Robinson worked a walk to load the bases, before SS Hanser Alberto ripped a two-run double to left-center field, scoring Sardinas and Grayson and leading to an errant throw on the cut-off from center, enabling Robinson to score as well with Alberto reaching third base. RF Zach Cone promptly brought Alberto in with an RBI single, making it 4-2. Cone raced around to third on a double from DH Kellin Deglan, putting runners at second and third with no outs. C Joe Maloney bounced into a fielder's choice, on which the RiverDogs retired Cone at the plate, but Deglan advanced to third and Maloney got to second on the play. After a wild pitch scored Deglan and moved Maloney to third, 1B Trever Adams drove an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Maloney for the 6-2 lead.
The RiverDogs cut the deficit in half with a two-run homer by Nunez in the top of the eighth, slicing the 'Dads lead to 6-4.
Hickory RHP Phil Klein (S, 2) took over on the mound and, with the help of two highlight-reel catches by Alberto on line drives up the middle, dealt a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to close the 6-4 win for the 'Dads.
