Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 8-1 at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. The Power put runners on base in the first, second, fifth, and eighth innings and scored at least one run each time while securing the series win.
In the first, West Virginia got a run-scoring single by Chris Lashmet, who then scored on a double from Dan Gamache. Jose Osuna hit a solo home run in the second to extend the lead to 3-0 for Power starter Robby Rowland.
Lakewood threatened to break up the shutout in the third when Josh Ludy was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on a ground out. Tim Carver then singled to center and Ludy was sent home, Gregory Polanco's throw from the outfield was on point to get Ludy at the plate for the final out of the inning.
West Virginia added two runs in the fifth on a double by Polanco that brought home Alen Hanson from second and Taylor Lewis from first for a 5-0 advantage.
Rowland pitched six scoreless innings in his 10th appearance for the Power this season, striking three along the way. The BlueClaws lone run was on a Gauntlett Eldemire home run off Power reliever Rinku Singh in the top of the seventh.
West Virginia closed the scoring with three runs off the Lakewood bullpen in the bottom of the eighth.
Rowland (5-2) earned the win and Ramon Oviedo (1-7) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs over five innings. The Power collected 12 hits, including multi-hit games by five different players, and won for the third time in this five-game series. It marks the fourth series win this season by West Virginia.
