Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - Two Asheville Tourists home runs accounted for three of their four runs as the Augusta GreenJackets fell by a 4-2 final on Saturday night at McCormick Field.
The Tourists got the first of the two homers on the first hitter they sent to the plate. Trevor Story led off the first inning by drilling a 2-1 pitch from Augusta starter Paul Davis over the right field wall to put the Tourists up 1-0. They added to their lead in the second on the only run they scored that didn't involve a homer. Jared Simon's RBI single doubled Asheville's lead to 2-0.
Davis was again the victim of a home run in the fifth inning. After Sam Mende doubled with one out, Will Swanner drilled his second homer of the series to move Asheville's lead to 4-0.
The GreenJackets got back into the game in the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles from Jose Cuevas and Joe Staley to cut the Asheville lead back to two runs, but could draw no closer. A strikeout-caught stealing double play wiped off a chance in the seventh and Augusta stranded a runner in the eighth. The GreenJackets got two on base in the ninth with one out before a double play ended the game.
Davis (3-4) allowed four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks in his seven innings - his longest start of the year. Asheville's Ben Alsup (9-4) moved into a second-place tie in the league's wins category with his ninth of the season. In eight strong innings, Alsup scattered ten hits and two runs while striking out five. Jefri Hernandez got out of the ninth inning without any issues for his 13th save of the year to move him into a second-place tie for the league lead in saves.
The GreenJackets, just 1-7 this season at Asheville's McCormick Field, will try to salvage two wins out of their current five-game road trip in the series finale on Sunday. Edwin Escobar (3-5, 3.82) takes the mound against Vianney Mayo (2-3, 4.99) in the final regular season meeting between the teams in 2012. First pitch comes at 2:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home to open an eight-game homestand next Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against the Greenville Drive. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
