Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads scored 11 runs in the first five innings, cruising to the 12-5 win against the Delmarva Shorebirds, before 1,571 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday evening. C Kellin Deglan (five RBIs) and 3B Drew Robinson (four RBIs) combined to drive in nine of the 12 runs for Hickory.
The Shorebirds (4-12, 32-53) took a two-run lead in the top of the first inning against LHP Kevin Matthews. After Matthews walked the bases loaded, CF Glynn Davis scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of LF Connor Narron for the game's first run. DH Michael Ohlman followed with an RBI single, lifting the Shorebirds to the 2-0 lead.
The Crawdads (13-4, 49-37), though, responded right away in the bottom of the first against RHP Parker Bridwell (L, 2-7). 2B Rougned Odor led off with a bunt single and reached second on a throwing error committed by Bridwell. RF Trever Adams followed with a single that moved Odor to third, putting two men on. Both runners raced home on a two-run double to left field from 3B Drew Robinson that featured Adams crashing into Delmarva C Adam Davis at the plate to knock the ball loose and score. Robinson scored on a wild pitch later in the inning, tilting the lead in Hickory's favor, 3-2.
The 'Dads then launched a pair of home runs in the third and fourth innings, stretching the lead further. Robinson unloaded a two-run shot off the scoreboard in the third, before Deglan pulled a two-run bomb over the left-field wall the next inning, making it 7-2.
In the fifth inning, the Crawdads kept the foot on the gas pedal with two more long-balls. With one away, C Jorge Alfaro belted a solo shot over the left-field wall. Robinson then worked a walk and darted to third base on a double by SS Edwin Garcia one out later. Deglan struck again with a three-run homer inside the right-field foul pole, stretching the lead to 11-2.
RHP Arlett Mavare (W, 4-4) kept the 'Dads nine-run lead intact through 2.1 scoreless relief frames, before RHP Chance Sossamon took over for the final two frames. The Shorebirds collected three runs in the top of the eighth, cutting it down to an 11-5 deficit
The 'Dads tacked on one more tally in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Alfaro, accounting for the 12-5 final score in the Crawdads win.
