Power Blank Legends Again
May 25, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power shutout the Lexington Legends for the second straight game, winning 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Kyle McPherson pitched seven no-hit innings and was backed two home runs in the seventh to earn the win.
McPherson was sharp from the outset, retiring the side in order in the first and second innings, including striking out all three in the second. The right-hander allowed a leadoff walk in the third, but saw his defense turn an inning ending double play. McPherson struck out the side again in the sixth, three of his nine strikeouts for the day.
In the bottom of the seventh, West Virginia rallied against Colton Pitkin. The reliever came on with the bases loaded in the sixth and record to strikeouts to end the inning. With one out in the seventh, Pitkin walked Evan Chambers and Elevys Gonzalez. Aaron Baker then drove a ball over the right field wall to put the Power on the board and put McPherson in line for a win. Jesus Brito followed one hit and one out later with his fifth home run of the season to extend the West Virginia advantage to 5-0.
Ryan Kelly took over on the mound for the Power in the eighth and retired the first two batters he faced before allowing a single to Miguel Arrendell, which turned out to be the lone Legends hit of the game. Kelly struck out the final batter in the eighth and the side in the ninth to cap of the shutout. Tuesday's win was the fifth shutout by Power pitchers this season and marked the first time that West Virginia pitching completed back-to-back shutouts since 2005. The Power beat Lakewood 10-0 and 5-0 on June 11 and 12, 2005 at Appalachian Power Park.
West Virginia and Lexington will play at 11:05 am on Wednesday. Jason Erickson will face Tanner Bushue on the second of two consecutive Grand Slam School Days, each with a pre-noon starting time.
