GREENVILLE, S.C. - Derrik Gibson scored the game-winning run for Greenville in the bottom of the ninth on a Charleston error, as the Drive defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 1-0, in South Atlantic League action at Fluor Field Tuesday evening.
Greenville ups its record to 23-23, while Charleston has lost three straight in falling 19-27, a season-high eight games under .500.
In the bottom of the ninth, RiverDogs reliever Ben Watkins (2-2) recorded the first two outs of the frame before allowing an infield single to Gibson. Gibson stole second and took third on a wild pitch which was intended to be an intentional walk to Chris McGuiness. McGuiness, a former Citadel standout, was eventually issued the free pass, putting men at first and third with two outs.
Michael Almanzar hit a sharp grounder down the third-base line, but Charleston's Rob Lyerly made a sensational diving stop. However, his throw to first bounced wide, and Gibson scored the game-winning run.
Charleston's best opportunity to score came in the fifth, when Kyle Higashioka doubled and Ray Kruml singled to put men at second and third with no outs, but starter Yeiper Castillo fanned the next two batters and induced a groundout to end the threat.
Both starting pitchers were sensational, as Charleston's Shaeffer Hall tied a career-high tossing 8.0 scoreless innings of three-hit ball, with one walk and three strikeouts. The former Kansas Jayhawk permitted only one runner in scoring position and faced only two batters over the minimum.
Greenville's Castillo tied a season-high with his 6.0 scoreless innings, surrendering just four Charleston hits with no walks and four punchouts.
Cesar Cabral (2-0) earned the relief victory, humming 3.0 hitless innings with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
These two squads square off in game three of this series on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The RiverDogs send right-hander Sean Black (3-3, 5.66 ERA), while Greenville plans to pitch right-hander Ryan Pressly (1-3, 3.54 ERA).
