Sloppy Suns Drop Game to BlueClaws
May 25, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
Four errors led to six runs as the Hagerstown Suns (26-20) lost to the Lakewood BlueClaws (25-21) 9-2 on Tuesday.
The Suns got on the board first, as shortstop Francisco Soriano reached on an error leading off the game and eventually scored on a ground-out by third baseman Steven Souza.
Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there for Hagerstown.
The BlueClaws responded in the bottom of the first inning with a run on a hit, an error and a walk against Suns starting pitcher Paul Applebee (1-2).
Applebee was the victim of bad defense in the second, as Souza committed an error on a ground ball hit by the first batter of the inning, shortstop Jonathan Villar. Two singles, bookending an Applebee strikeout, loaded the bases with one out, but the left-hander battled back by striking out centerfielder Jiwan James.
The Suns thought they had gotten out of the second inning when catcher Adrian Nieto threw behind the runner at first, but left fielder Domingo Santana was ruled safe in front of the tag by Justin Bloxom. Applebee then hit Villar with a pitch and gave up a bases-clearing double to third baseman Adam Buschini, giving the BlueClaws a 5-1 lead.
Two more runs in the bottom of the third inning spelled the end of the night for Applebee, but Glen Gibson had no more luck replacing him.
In the fourth, Gibson allowed two hits, but an error on second baseman Jeff Kobernus extended the inning and Lakewood tacked on two more runs to give the BlueClaws a 9-1 lead.
The Suns scored another unearned run in the top of the sixth inning to bring the score to the final 9-2 line.
Applebee took the loss, surrendering seven runs, though only three earned, in two and two-thirds innings of work.
Left-hander Matt Way (3-4) earned the win for the Blueclaws. Way lasted seven innings, allowed two unearned runs and struck out seven while giving up just four base hits.
Hagerstown ended up with four errors in the game, one off their season high.
The Suns and Shorebirds will play the third game of their four game series on Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. The series is currently tied at one game apiece.
