Intimidators Stop Gnats 2-1 Tuesday Night

May 25, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - After the Savannah Sand Gnats beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-2 in the bottom of the 13th inning in the completion of Monday's suspended game, the Intimidators (23-23) stopped Savannah with a 2-1 win in Tuesday's regularly scheduled game.

Savannah (27-19) starter Taylor Whitenton tossed a 1-2-3 first inning before running into trouble in the second inning in Tuesday's second game. He gave up a leadoff single to Ian Gac, and then in the big at-bat of the game, Kannapolis RF Nick Ciolli pounded a triple off the base of the centerfield wall, chasing home Gac. Ciolli scored on CF Trace Thompson's RBI groundout to make the score 2-0 Kannapolis. Whitenton walked the next two hitters but recovered after a visit from pitching coach Marc Valdes to induce a pair of harmless fly balls to end the frame.

The Gnats scored their only run in the fifth. RF Cesar Puello led off with a clean single to left and a 2B Luis Rivera doubled to put runners at second and third. After a LF Rafael Fernandez walk, Savannah had the bases loaded with no one outs, down 2-0. The next batter, CF Juan Lagares drilled a liner right to Gac, the Kannapolis first baseman who made the catch reaching to his left. SS Wilmer Flores then brought home Puello with a sacrifice fly to right to make the score 2-1. 3B Jefry Marte followed by drilling a line drive to third, right at Kannapolis third baseman Jake Oester, who barely moved his glove to make the catch.

Whitenton was the tough-luck loser for Savannah, despite holding the Intimidators to two runs in six innings. LHP Darin Gorski was sensational for the Gnats, firing three perfect innings of relief with five strikeouts. He did not allow a ball out of the infield.

The Gnats and Intimidators play game three of their four-game series Wednesday at 7:05 pm. Armando Rodriguez (2-4, 3.25) takes the ball for Savannah against RHP Justin Collop (2-4, 7.75) for Kannapolis. The pre-game show on the radio begins at 6:50 on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com.

THE SUSPENDED GAME:

Savannah, GA - It took 13 innings, nearly four hours of game time and over 22 total over two days, but the Savannah Sand Gnats (27-18) beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-2 Tuesday in the suspended game from Monday evening. Jefry Marte drove home all three Gnats runs, driving home 2B Alonzo Harris with a bloop to shallow centerfield in the bottom of the 13th. The regularly scheduled game will begin at 7:05 pm with RHP Taylor Whitenton (2-1, 2.70) taking on RHP Matt Wicksway (4-3, 5.27).

In the bottom of the 13th, with one out, Harris singled up the middle. CF Pedro Zapata dropped a gorgeous bunt down in front of home plate that the Kannapolis reliever, Zach Piccola and catcher, Miguel Gonzalez converged on, but each slipped, and neither picked up the baseball to allow Zapata to reach on a bunt base hit and Harris to scoot up to second. After SS Wilmer Flores flew out to center field, Marte dunked his bloop into shallow center to bring home the speedy Harris with the winning run.

Savannah took a 2-1 lead last night in a downpour in the sixth inning when Marte ripped a double into leftcenter field to drive home two runs.

Starter Jimmy Fuller held the Intimidators (22-23) to one run over six innings with eight strikeouts. Lance Hoge gave up an unearned run that tied the game in the seventh, but threw 4.2 strong innings. Michael Powers fanned four in his 2.1 innings of work to pick up his first win of the season.
